A study was conducted at the Institute of Pediatrics in Baku, Azerbaijan to
investigate the ultrasonographic findings in premature infants with intrauterine
cytomegalovirus (CMV) and/or herpes virus infections. These infants were
divided into groups according to infections as follows: Group 1: CMV infection
(n = 37 infants); Group 2: herpes virus infection (n = 29 infants); Group
3: CMV and herpes virus infection (n = 26 infants); and Group 4: controls
(n=20 infants). Ultrasonographic findings were worse in Groups 1 and 3.
The importance of cranial ultrasonography in the evaluation of these infants
is emphasized.
