Parvovirus B19 infection is a common childhood illness. Asymptomatic or mild infection occurs most often when parvovirus B19 affects immunocompetent adults, but in pregnancy it may lead to fetal loss or hydrops fetalis. Parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy probably occurs in 0.25-1.0% of pregnancies in the United States (approximately 10,000 to 40,000 pregnancies per year). Most of these infections are never noted and do not adversely affect the pregnancy. However, 2-10% of infections result in hydrops fetalis. In this review, the effects of parvovirus B19 infections in both pregnancy and the fetus are discussed.
