Skin rashes account for many of the outpatient visits in pediatric patients. We aimed to evaluate the etiologic causes of admissions with skin rashes in pediatric infectious disease outpatient clinics, retrospectively. A total of 423 pediatric cases admitted with skin rashes in a year period. The most frequent causes were viral infections among which the leading was primary varicella infection (24%). Etiologic causes of 30% of the patients were not defined. Seventy seven percent of patients with primary varicella infection were older than 5 years of age and 6.8% of these patients were hospitalized. Patients with hand-foot and mouth disease (9.9%) were mostly younger than 5 years age and none of them were hospitalized. Especially for diagnosis of viral diseases, rapid microbiological tests would be very useful. Beyond infectious causes, dermatological and rheumatological diseases were diagnosed, showing that a multidisciplinary approach may be beneficial in determination of diagnosis.
