The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of congenital heart disease among newborn patients. In addition, the reasons for hospitalization and pediatric cardiology consultations of the patients with congenital heart disease were evaluated. In a one-year period, among 3123 newborns hospitalized in the neonatal unit for different reasons, 201 neonates were examined with echocardiography because of the suspicion of congenital heart disease. Fifty-nine percent of the patients found to have congenital heart disease, were hospitalized for noncardiovascular reasons. The most common cause for cardiology consultation was heart murmur. The most frequently detected acyanotic congenital heart diseases were atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect and most frequent cyanotic congenital heart diseases were transposition of great arteries and tetralogy of Fallot. The prevalence of congenital heart diseases among hospitalized newborns during a one-year period was 4.9% (154/3123). The importance of evaluation for congenital heart diseases is emphasized in this study, since patients with congenital heart disease might be hospitalized for noncardiovascular causes.
